Contrast Shadow work on cotton and chiffon sarees is a very delicate and yet complicated form of embroidery.  Cotton and Chiffon sarees shadow work is very versatile and looks both delicate and complicated, but it is quite sturdy.  This effect can be used in a variety of ways with a wide range of designs and themes. It is the work done on the reverse side using herringbone stitch which creates a shadow like impression on the front face. Contrast shadow work sarees with white on white is the oldest and most primary form of shadow work, which is why it is often filled in with white work embroidery.  As times and tastes have changed throughout the ages, so has shadow work. In contrast shadow work two bright colour threads are used, one for the outline and the other for filling up. Contrast shadow work is also done on Jute, Kota, Georgette material. Contrast Shadow work is the strong outline of the fabric that is filled in with coloured thread from the back so that the colour shows through the fabric.
